Cannot Reproduce Popup in alerts pulldown making it impossible to select items

It doesn't show it, but my mouse cursor is hovering over the "Alerts" menu item well above the pull down. At no time did I put the mouse cursor over the user's name in the pulldown itself. This happens intermittently, like right now it is not happening, but once it does happen, no matter where I put the mouse, the popup for the user's profile prevents me from selecting anything in the pulldown. It happens very often and is rather annoying.

It might be more prevalent with different font sizes or magnification. I have not noticed it recently.
