Join the #1 community for gun owners of the Northwest
We believe the 2nd Amendment is best defended through grass-roots organization, education, and advocacy centered around individual gun owners. It is our mission to encourage, organize, and support these efforts throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
Ocean crab closed after Saturday so I dropped pots late Friday. I know I've been in rougher water but not much - my target depth was 150' about 5 miles north of the jetties. At 124' and 2 miles north I called it and dumped 2 big pots. Got tired of fighting the NW waves and gusting winds. Several times I caught a bucket of water right in the face. Best speed was 8 mph against the drift. I managed 18 mph on the way back but couldn't go faster because the waves were too close together.
Pulling the pots the next day was really easy as the ocean had calmed considerably. Enough so that my wife came with me, which also doubled the amount of crab we could keep.
I knew we were in business when the first pot came up. Sixteen big ocean crab.
None of them needed the gauge to determine keeper status and most were pushing 7" across the back. The second pot had even more so we high graded for the best 24. I also collected a gallon of ocean water to take home for the steaming pot.
Processed the crab at 11:00 am and steamed them at 3:00 pm. Fresh crab and French bread until we got tired of it. I cracked a bunch more the next day for my crab topped English muffins. Crab, green onions, cilantro, garlic aioli, mayo, Worcestershire sauce, and Parmesan and Swiss cheeses.
